The Eisenhower Ridge Building 19 project is a historic renovation of a 60,700 SF old Veteran’s Administration (VA) mess hall. Originally constructed in 1884, it now houses the Central Plain Consolidated Patient Account Center (CP-CPAC) for the Veteran’s Administration. The historic renovation included three main levels as well as an East and West “penthouse”.

The intent of the executed design was to add modern functionality while refurbishing original, historic elements. The tenant’s needs included adding state-of-the-art IT and telecommunication systems as well as meeting rooms, training rooms and cubicle space. The scope of work included a multitude of demolition and replacement of utilities; installing a raised flooring system, restoring historical trim and windows; installation of new insulation and fire protection systems; removal of two-story green wall system and addition of new glass storefront to name a few. There were many obstacles with this 125-year old site; vacancy since 1995 and the safety concerns throughout; restoration of historic elements while updating and adding to the structure; parameters of the existing structure and how to bring in materials to do the work.

This once endangered site now serves a purpose again and can be viewed for generations to come. Straub is proud and honored to have provided quality services for this project.

The skeleton of a would-be southern Johnson County soccer complex that sat vacant and barren for nearly two years now is considered one of the most eco-friendly public recreation centers in the area.

A local architecture firm announced Wednesday that it designed the reuse of Johnson County Park & Recreation District’s New Century Fieldhouse — the first public recreation center in the Kansas City metro area to receive any level of LEED certification. Shawnee-based Straub Construction Co. Inc. built the fieldhouse, which is located at 551 New Century Parkway near Gardner, Kan., for roughly $4.8 million, while DLR Group’s architect fees totaled nearly $400,000 for the reuse project, according to Johnson County.

Throughout every phase of the building project, the Straub staff demonstrated a high level of professionalism and commitment to delivering an on time and on budget building. There were a minimum of change orders associated with this project. This is attributed not only to a well designed and detailed construction document, but a solid working relationship among school district personnel, architects, and Straub staff. As a result, it is clear from comments from patrons of the district they are very proud of this new facility

WASHINGTON, D.C . – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced that Straub Construction Company, Inc.’s work on the Entertainment Properties Trust project (EPR) in Kansas City, Mo., has earned the company an Eagle Award in the Historical Restoration – $2-$10 million category of ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards. Straub Construction Company’s representatives received the award during the 21st annual Excellence in Construction Awards celebration at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Orlando, Fla.

“ABC congratulates Straub Construction Company for its exceptional work on the Properties Trust project,” said Michael D. Bellaman, ABC president and CEO. “This project is an outstanding example of the innovation and commitment to superior craftsmanship that embody merit shop construction.”

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects and safety programs. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer.

The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

This year’s competition was open to all construction projects completed by ABC member firms in 2010.

Despite several client-initiated changes, Straub completed this $2.5 million design-build historical office restoration within a tight workspace and ahead of its aggressive 11-week time frame.

“This project demonstrates our capabilities and commitment to our customers’ success,” said Ernie Straub III, president of Straub Construction. “It was a pleasure to work with a great customer like Entertainment Properties Trust and a great project team.”

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year’s panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the American Institute of Architects, and the National Association of Women in Construction, and representatives from higher education, among others.

In February Straub Construction earned “2010 General Contractor of the Year” award from the local ABC chapter.

A new K-8 school in the southeast corner of the Wichita district moved a step closer to completion Wednesday with a chilly groundbreaking ceremony that included the planting of daffodil bulbs at the site.

“These flowers will bloom this spring, and they will remind us we have to be patient,” said Superintendent John Allison. “The end result will be worth the wait.”

The $16 million school is being built to relieve crowding in the district’s southeast quadrant, particularly at Seltzer Elementary. It is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012.

It is the second new K-8 school to be funded by a $370 million bond issue that voters approved in 2008.

The school will feature three classroom wings, a library, an 800-seat auditorium, music suites and a gymnasium that will serve as a storm shelter. It is designed to eventually become a middle school as district growth demands.

GLMV Architecture designed the project. Straub Construction Co. is the contractor.

This project was unique because of the intensely tight schedule, historic features, and client’s high standards. According to David Brain, CEO of EPR, Straub Construction exceeded their expectations.

Shawnee, Kan., Dec. 2, 2010 — Straub Construction of Kansas City was presented three “Excellence in Construction” (EIC) awards and the “President’s Award for Best General Contractor” by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) Heart of America Chapter. Each project team was recognized yesterday during the ABC’s annual awards banquet at the Sheraton Hotel in Overland Park.

Projects earning the prestigious EIC awards were: Entertainment Properties Trust, a $2.2 million project in Kansas City, Mo., in the renovation category; Goddard Unified School District 265, in Goddard Ks., in the $25 million and over commercial category; and the $5 million Holy Angels Catholic Church, Basehor, Ks., won in the institutional category. The Entertainment Properties Trust project went on to win the President’s Award for Best Commercial Project.

When asked about the project, Entertainment Properties Trust President and CEO David Brain said, “The Straub team was able to complete the majority of our multi-million dollar job encompassing over 30,000 square feet in less than 10 weeks…We could not have asked for a better team. Everyone has been professional and very pleasant to work with. Straub has performed an extraordinary job, and has made Entertainment Properties Trust a very happy client.”

The three award-winning projects illustrate Straub Construction Company’s diversity as a general contractor. Two are new construction and structural steel framed projects, each with challenges overcome, while the third involved constant changes involving the renovation of a historic space in an extremely tight timeframe.

Two of Straub’s projects – Entertainment Properties Trust and Goddard USD 265 – are now being considered for national construction awards, coordinated by the ABC National organization. Straub Construction is celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2010 and has won other awards, including Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Top Ten Small Businesses, Kansas City, Ks. Small Business of the Year, Best Places to Work, Capstone awards and more.

“We know the importance of a good working relationship with the general contractor, and we have been very grateful for an excellent working relationship with Straub Construction Company,” said Charlie Edmonds, superintendent of Goddard USD 265. “We have enjoyed working with the Straub team, and hope we have an opportunity to do so again in the future.”

About the projects:

Goddard Schools: an 87,000 SF elementary school and a 128,000 SF middle school were constructed on a rapidly expanding campus. The biggest safety challenge with this project was an underground gas line located between the two job sites. Amenities include: three gymnasiums, locker rooms, reinforced storm shelters, computer labs, media center with radius wall, commercial kitchens, irrigation systems and more.

Entertainment Properties Trust: In just 11 weeks, the second floor, mezzanine, and third floor levels of historic 909 Walnut were transformed into 30,958 square foot of upscale office space. The overall goal was to keep history intact, yet make it “21st Century” through innovative design, state-of-the-art sound system and acoustics, cascading water feature, dramatic lighting, natural stone, and more.

Holy Angels Catholic Church: Built to currently accommodate 920 parishioners, this 21,230 square foot church is structural steel framed and has exposed timber framed roof structure. The ceiling consists of tongue-in-groove wood decking. Three pairs of 10-feet tall full-lite glass doors surround a storefront curtain wall. Perhaps the most prominent feature is the collective 13 large skylights covering the towers and extraordinary large skylights over the Alter.

###

Straub Construction Company, now celebrating their 90th anniversary, is a general contractor in Kansas City focused on a diverse scale of multifamily, commercial, institutional, religious and historic renovation construction.
In fact, since their return to the church, their contributions to Catholic schools have grown so varied and significant that they will be honored with the “Angels Among Us” award at the 8th annual Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) dinner. But it wasn’t always that way.

What do the largest municipal water park in Kansas (Salina’s Kenwood Cove Water Park, below), the renovation space in 909 Walnut (above), and a $29 million construction project for Goddard School District have in common? They are just a few of the projects entrusted to Straub Construction, an award-winning general contractor with 90 years of experience specializing in builder contractor services. Their resume includes new construction and renovation of multifamily, commercial, institutional, religious as well as historic renovation.

Straub’s list of accomplishments over the years is a long one — this is the fourth consecutive year they were named a top ten “Best Places to Work” by the Kansas City Business Journal. Straub was named a 2010 Top 10 Small Business — for the second time — by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. And this past summer, the Kansas Department of Commerce named Straub Construction the East Central Regional Business Excellence Award winner.

As part of a new master plan, the City of Warrensburg renovated a four-square block area of their downtown. The first stage of this redevelopment was a new 20,000 two-story police headquarters building.

Before construction could begin, the existing street and utilities had to be removed and relocated nearby. This presented challenges and delayed the start of construction by 3.5 months. However, Straub Construction completed the project on time and in budget allowing the Police Department to move into their new facility on schedule.

The master plan for the new city buildings incorporated deep blue high pressure laminate panels, brick work, split face block and pre-finished metal paneling as part of the building exterior finish giving the building an unique eclectic finish.

The building also numerous facilities, such as offices, locker rooms, jail cells, break area and a meeting room. Another feature is the Sally Port, equipped with a high pressure carwash system and space indoors for eight vehicles.

Shawnee, Kan., July 21, 2010 – The Kansas Department of Commerce named Straub Construction Company the state’s East Central Regional Business Excellence Award winner. The award is part of Business Appreciation Month, the Department’s annual celebration of Kansas businesses for their contributions to their communities and the state economy. Straub Construction was recognized yesterday at a Business Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the Shawnee Economic Development Council (EDC).

Straub Construction, currently celebrating their 90th anniversary, is a general contractor based in Shawnee. Their award-winning projects include new construction, renovation and historic renovation of commercial, multi-family, institutional, recreational and healthcare facilities.

Presenting the award to Straub Construction was Tom Langhofer, chair of the Shawnee EDC’s Executive Committee and J.R. Robl, regional project manager for the Kansas Department of Commerce.

“Kansas businesses are the backbone of our economy and our quality of life,” said Robl. “Business Appreciation Month is our way of thanking these great Kansas businesses for all they do to keep our state strong.”

This year Straub Construction has earned other awards for exceeding industry standards, customer expectations, corporate culture, and community support. Among the awards are being named the “2010 Small Business of the Year” by the Kansas City Kansas Chamber of Commerce; a “2010 Top 10 Small Business” by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce; and is currently a “2010 Top Ten Companies” award winner presented by KC Business Magazine.

“We are very pleased to be recognized by the State of Kansas. For 90 years Straub Construction primarily worked in the Kansas City metro area,” said Straub. “Today, our company strategically builds projects across the state, including Goddard, Salina, and Hiawatha.
Shawnee, Kan., June 8, 2010 – Three Capstone Awards were recently presented to the Straub Construction Company project team for enhancing the Kansas City metropolitan area. Winning projects included mixed-use Phoenix Building in Overland Park, plus two multi-family projects including Hyde Park Apartments in Kansas City, Mo. and Northeast Junior High Place senior living in Kansas City, Ks. Each project was completed in 2009. Straub Construction Company, now celebrating their 90th anniversary, is a general contractor located in Shawnee.

While the Phoenix Building involved new construction within a historic downtown, both of the multi-family projects were equally challenging historic renovation projects that now offer quality, affordable residences for Kansas City families of all ages.

This is the fifth year the Capstone Awards program has recognized projects including real estate development, design, construction, and transactions that enhance the Kansas City metropolitan area. Straub Construction and their project teams have been recognized with Capstone Awards for the past four consecutive years.

This spring the Straub Construction team was also presented an Excellence in Construction award by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) for the Phoenix Building project. Located in downtown Overland Park, this building is a three-story development project designed by incite Design and is located on the former site of the Gil Rumsey Art Gallery. The Phoenix Building is stylish, yet crafted to blend seamlessly with the existing historic area.
