Kansas Department of Commerce Names Straub Construction a Regional Business Excellence Award Winner

Shawnee, Kan., July 21, 2010 – The Kansas Department of Commerce named Straub Construction Company the state’s East Central Regional Business Excellence Award winner. The award is part of Business Appreciation Month, the Department’s annual celebration of Kansas businesses for their contributions to their communities and the state economy. Straub Construction was recognized yesterday at a Business Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the Shawnee Economic Development Council (EDC).

Straub Construction, currently celebrating their 90th anniversary, is a general contractor based in Shawnee. Their award-winning projects include new construction, renovation and historic renovation of commercial, multi-family, institutional, recreational and healthcare facilities.

Presenting the award to Straub Construction was Tom Langhofer, chair of the Shawnee EDC’s Executive Committee and J.R. Robl, regional project manager for the Kansas Department of Commerce.

“Kansas businesses are the backbone of our economy and our quality of life,” said Robl. “Business Appreciation Month is our way of thanking these great Kansas businesses for all they do to keep our state strong.”

This year Straub Construction has earned other awards for exceeding industry standards, customer expectations, corporate culture, and community support. Among the awards are being named the “2010 Small Business of the Year” by the Kansas City Kansas Chamber of Commerce; a “2010 Top 10 Small Business” by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce; and is currently a “2010 Top Ten Companies” award winner presented by KC Business Magazine.

“We are very pleased to be recognized by the State of Kansas. For 90 years Straub Construction primarily worked in the Kansas City metro area,” said Straub. “Today, our company strategically builds projects across the state, including Goddard, Salina, and Hiawatha. We have teamed up with numerous subcontractors local to those respective areas. Straub Construction is especially proud of recently completing Salina’s Kenwood Cove, the state’s largest municipally-owned water park.”

“Economic growth, sound and welcoming business policy are the keys to prosperity of all Kansans,” added Straub.

The Department of Commerce Award presented 26 Regional Business Excellence Award winners and 105 Merit Award winners. Each of the 131 business was nominated in one of four categories: Manufacturing/Distribution, Service, Retail and Hospital/Non-Profit.

Straub Construction Receives Three Awards for Local Projects

Shawnee, Kan., June 8, 2010 – Three Capstone Awards were recently presented to the Straub Construction Company project team for enhancing the Kansas City metropolitan area. Winning projects included mixed-use Phoenix Building in Overland Park, plus two multi-family projects including Hyde Park Apartments in Kansas City, Mo. and Northeast Junior High Place senior living in Kansas City, Ks. Each project was completed in 2009. Straub Construction Company, now celebrating their 90th anniversary, is a general contractor located in Shawnee.

While the Phoenix Building involved new construction within a historic downtown, both of the multi-family projects were equally challenging historic renovation projects that now offer quality, affordable residences for Kansas City families of all ages.

This is the fifth year the Capstone Awards program has recognized projects including real estate development, design, construction, and transactions that enhance the Kansas City metropolitan area. Straub Construction and their project teams have been recognized with Capstone Awards for the past four consecutive years.

This spring the Straub Construction team was also presented an Excellence in Construction award by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) for the Phoenix Building project. Located in downtown Overland Park, this building is a three-story development project designed by incite Design and is located on the former site of the Gil Rumsey Art Gallery. The Phoenix Building is stylish, yet crafted to blend seamlessly with the existing historic area.

When finished, Hyde Park Hotel will return to its 1920s grandeur, remain on the state’s historic registry and offer affordable housing. The main entrance will feature an original, ornate ceiling once covered by a suspended ceiling to hide numerous holes and unsightly plumbing and fire sprinkler lines. Other renovations involve a grand staircase, refurbishing one elevator and enlarging another, and the building’s exterior. New features include cabinets, floor coverings and windows. All new mechanical, electrical and plumbing were installed. Also, interior walls were relocated to enlarge the units for today’s apartment dwellers.

Straub Construction Co. Earns National Excellence in Construction Award from Associated Builders and Contractors

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announces that Straub Construction Company’s work on the Weaver Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., has earned the company an Eagle Award in the Institutional $5-million – $10-million category of ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards. Straub Construction President Ernie Straub III received the award June 24 during the 19th annual Excellence in Construction Awards celebration at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.

This is the second time Straub Construction, Kansas City, earned a national award for the quality construction of Weaver Auditorium. In January, the National Commercial Builder’s Council (NCBC) recognized Straub with the “Project of the Year” award for their outstanding work as a general contractor.

“ABC congratulates Straub Construction for its exceptional work on the Weaver Auditorium,” said Kirk Pickerel, ABC president and CEO. “This project is an outstanding example of the innovation and commitment to superior craftsmanship that embody merit shop construction. It is a pleasure to honor this project with the association’s top construction excellence award.”

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects and safety programs. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer.

The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost. This year’s competition was open to all construction projects completed by ABC member firms during 2008.

With its 1,500-seat auditorium and two-story lobby features custom design elements, Weaver Auditorium required Straub to build a 20,000-square-foot scaffolding system to ensure subcontractors could safely access complex ceiling work. The building features high-end finishes and a state-of-the-art audio-visual system and lighting.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year’s panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Surety & Fidelity Association of America, Engineering News-Record and representatives from higher education, among others.

Shawnee, Kan., June 17, 2009 – The Kansas Department of Commerce named general contractor Straub Construction, Kansas City, a Merit Award winner. The award program is part of “Business Appreciation Month”, the Department’s annual celebration of Kansas businesses and their outstanding contributions to their communities and the state economy.

Royals’ Billy Butler hits first homeruns of season and helps feed KC’s hungry families

SHAWNEE, Kan. (April 30, 2009) – Billy Butler of The Kansas City Royals will help feed local families after pounding his first two home runs of the season during last night’s game.

As part of “Hit it a Ton” campaign, each time Butler hits a homerun during the 2009 season Straub Construction of Kansas City and Butler will each donate one ton of food to St. James Place, a food pantry operated by Bishop Sullivan Center.

Plus, Butler will have some help this year from his friend and teammate, Mike Aviles. Each time Aviles hits a home run Mail Print Inc. will donate a ton of food as well.

Last year Butler, Straub Construction and Bishop Sullivan Center raised nearly $100,000 through the Hit-It-A-Ton campaign to help feed hungry families in Kansas City. One ton of food is 2,000 pounds, and will provide emergency grocery assistance to 50 local families. The cost of a ton of food is $200 when purchased from the Harvesters Food Bank.

“This campaign aligns with the vision of Straub Construction in that we want to improve people’s lives within our community,” said Ernie Straub III, president of Straub Construction Company. “While a ton of food may sound like a lot, it really isn’t considering Bishop Sullivan Center operates two food pantries that feed about 100 families a day.”

“We hope the Kansas City community will join us in fighting hunger,” Straub continued. “It’s especially important given these challenging times families are currently faced with. Collectively, we can all make a difference.”

The general public can also get involved in Hit it a Ton and will be rewarded for their generosity. By visiting www.HitItATon.org, donors will receive Billy Butler autographed merchandise. Also, anyone who donates will receive a ticket to attend “Hit it a Ton Night at the K” that includes a pre-game tailgate party.

ABOUT BILLY BUTLER

Billy was born in Orange Park, Florida on April 18, 1986. He was one of only a few high school athletes to be named an All-State performer for five years, and during his senior season, Billy was honored with winning the “Jasper” award for Male Amateur Baseball Player of the Year named by the Florida Sports Awards; Louisville Slugger Player of the Year in Florida; The Florida Diamond Club Player of the Year; and the Times Union Player of the Year. In 2004, Billy garnered a first round selection with the Kansas City Royals and made his Major League debut in 2007.

Renovation Project Team Receives Preserve Missouri Award

Shawnee, Kan., March 16, 2009 – The Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation (MAHP) honored the project team of East Armour Apartments with the Preserve Missouri Award. The award was presented on March 5 at a special ceremony held in the Missouri State Capitol Rotunda with members of the legislature participating.

East Armour Apartments historic renovation project included seven buildings at three sites, with 309 one- and two-bedroom affordable apartments. Together, Eagle Point Enterprises, Rosemann & Associates, PC and Straub Construction Company completed rehabilitation and significantly restored the early 20th century buildings.

According to Missouri Preservation, the team significantly restored the historic exterior appearance as well as many interior spaces of the seven buildings, while raising the bar for low-income housing projects everywhere.

“The success of East Armour Apartments came down to commitment, expertise and hard-work of the members of our project team,” said Todd Alexander, managing director of Eagle Point Enterprises.

“This project was all about partnering,” said Jim Calvert, who fulfilled the role as senior project manager for Straub Construction. “Between government agencies, an experienced owner, the innovative design group and a dedicated team of subcontractors, this dilapidated structure was brought back to life and brings safe, quality housing back to Armour Boulevard.”

East Armour Apartments has been recognized with other awards. Currently, it is a finalist in the Kansas City Business Journal’s 2009 Capstone Award and nationally in fall 2008 with the J. Timothy Anderson Historic Preservation Award in the Affordable Housing category.

Missouri Preservation annually honors individuals, groups and organizations that contributed to the preservation of Missouri’s rich and diverse collection of historic resources. Twelve awards were given to outstanding projects in commercial and residential rehabilitation, neighborhood revitalization, landscape protection and archaeology.

It includes 1,500 seats, a performance stage, specialty audio-visual center and lighting systems, and unique auditorium ceiling finish. This project includes: 6,500 SF of granite flooring, extensive power and lighting provisions, curvilinear walls, cherry paneling, fluted cherry column covers, and a two-story lobby with open ornamental iron elliptical stairway.

In December 2008 Straub Construction was recognized with an Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Heart of America Chapter for the Weaver Auditorium project.

Located on the northeast corner of Independence Avenue and Paseo Boulevard, the auditorium adds modernization to KCUMB’s campus and enables commencement ceremonies to be hosted at the university for the first time ever. “Weaver Auditorium’s presence makes a positive impact not only on our campus, but also enhances the entire East Village area, located near downtown Kansas City,” said Richard Hoffine, executive vice president/chief operating officer of KCUMB. “Straub Construction has built three projects for KCUMB. The performance of Straub Construction’s project managers and field supervisors has been extraordinary,” Hoffine said.

Despite this commercial project’s challenges, Weaver Auditorium was completed successfully without a single accident or injury. The project team finished construction within the original budget and schedule as a result of working together with a common goal. Weaver Auditorium brings a renewed sense of pride for thousands of alumni, students and faculty.

Ernie Straub III named “2008 Generous Giver of the Year”

Shawnee, Kan., November 21, 2008 – The Servant Christian Community Foundation (SCCF) recognized Ernie Straub III of Shawnee with the 2008 SCCF Generous Giver Award” . The award was recently presented before 1,100 attendees at the 2008 Thurman Mitchell Servant Leadership Celebration.

Straub was chosen by the foundation as the recipient of the Generous Giver Award “as someone who is not only giving from his heart but engages others in the process. Through his business, Straub Construction Company in Shawnee, he has involved his family, his staff and entire company in the giving journey.”

According to SCCF, the Generous Giver Award is designed to lift up and honor those who typically shy away from the spotlight for their giving. The award does not measure dollar signs or amounts of giving rather the Generous Giver Award seeks to recognize the heart of the giver. SCCF’s vision is to be part of Creating a Culture of Generosity – with Generous Givers like Ernie Straub, we are seeing that dream become a reality in Kansas City.

“I was very surprised and humbled to receive this recognition,” said Ernie. “I am grateful for the award and for the Servant Christian Community Foundation. This is a fantastic foundation with creative solutions that inspire people to share their blessings with many worthwhile organizations.”

“On behalf of everyone at Straub Construction, I want to congratulate Ernie,” said Parker Young, Straub Construction vice president and chief operating officer. “Ernie’s God-given passion to help others is motivation to everyone he knows and meets. We admire and respect Ernie for his generosity in all that he does.”
