2016 Interns Starting at Straub Construction!

Hooray!  School is out which means a new batch of interns starting at Straub Construction.

For the Summer of 2016, we welcome Logan Stark from the University of Central Missouri, Sarah Matthews from Pittsburg State University and Randal Chushuk from Kansas State University. These three fresh-faced individuals will be dividing their time between Project Management, Estimating and the Field while gaining experience and hopefully honing in on what their true passion in construction will be.

When asked “what do you most like about construction?” the general consensus was they all enjoyed being out in the field and having hands on experience. What these three also have in common is that they like being outdoors whether it is fishing, hunting or being out on the lake.  Sounds like they will fit in perfectly with our team!

We are excited to have Logan, Sarah and Randal on board as we show them what being a part of Straub is all about. Work hard, play hard.

Once we wrap up the Summer, we will check in with them and get their final thoughts. Stay tuned!

Goodbye Project Management Workbook. Hello Procore!

Procore LogoIn early 2013, we started to explore Cloud based Project Management software. Our goal was to improve the collaboration and communication between our project team including Project Managers, Superintendents, Architects, Engineers, Owners and Subcontractors.   We had an effective system in place that was mostly Excel based, but saw room for improvement. In order to communicate effectively with the entire project team, most importantly our PM and Supers, we chose Procore.

Procore has given us the ability to manage all project related information from a single location that is easily and quickly accessible in the cloud.

The most significant area of improvement we’ve experienced is the level of communication between the PMs and Supers.  No longer is there a need to email documents back and forth. Instead, everyone has access to all project related information, that’s real time and transparent, allowing for better communication throughout the day.

One of the coolest features of Procore is their Drawings tool, especially when using the Procore app on a mobile device.  All of our PMs and Supers are equipped with an iPad in addition to their mobile phones and computers.  Starting in 2013, we were able to electronically post all our as-builts (a revised set of drawings submitted by a contractor upon completion of a project or a particular job) as well as links to RFI’s (Request For Information) which ensures we are building off the most recent changes/clarifications to the project.

Procore isn’t just for Straub’s benefit.

We give access to our Subcontractors, Architects and Owners.  This helps ensure that our collaboration with the entire team is as accurate and real time as possible. It’s been a fun evolution to see not only Straub personnel but also our Subcontractors use the Procore app to access information daily.

It’s a great tool for upper management as well. From the ability to read daily logs to managing risks, Procore provides us with numerous tools to analyze trends and address issues proactively.

Procore has quickly become an industry leader in Cloud Based Project Management Software and it’s easy for us to see why.

Not only is the software easy to use, Procore has become a real partner by equipping us to collaborate at the highest level with our entire project team.  The feedback from Architects, Owners and Subcontractors has been very positive.

Tim Wilcoxon, Owner Rep for Shawnee Mission School District stated “With Procore, the information we need is always available.  No more waiting for the mail or phone calls to be returned. It’s a very useful tool to help manage a project.”

The Awards Rolled in during May! KCASA and AGC Awards.

KCASA LogoWe were honored to start off the month of May being selected as the Small to Medium General Contractor of the Year by the Kansas City American Subcontractors Association.

To be the winner of this award, the KCASA nomination committee found Straub Construction to be the “Best of the Best in Kansas City.”

Award ReceptionWe were given the award during the Industry Awards Banquet, on May 6th, at the Uptown Theatre.

Thank you to the subcontractor community! Without your support and valued relationships we wouldn’t have been nominated. We would also like to congratulate our friends at McCownGordon Construction for receiving Large General Contractor of the Year, and D’Agostino Mechanical for receiving Subcontractor of the Year.

AGC LogoThe second award we were honored to receive was the 2016 Building Excellence Award for the $5-$10 million category from the Associated General Contractors of America.

The awards was for our work on The Creamery Building Renovation Project. The Creamery Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and regained life through the eyes of Kansas City developer Vince Bryant of 3dDevelopment.

Creamery BuildingStraub Construction, along with Finkle Williams Architecture, Blackbird Design Studio, Lankford Fendler Associates, and PMA Engineering teamed up to bring the building that was originally built 1911 back to life with LEED Gold standards.

The building finishes are exposed concrete and brick exterior with glass walls, wood features, and steel mixed in throughout. Vince and the architects had a great vision when it came to high end modern furniture and fixtures to finish the spaces off.

Next time you are in the Crossroads District, swing by the Creamery and check it out!
