Project Spotlight: Olathe Pregnancy Clinic

By Hannah Morrey Brown, Project Manager at Straub Construction

Olathe Pregnancy ClinicS2 had the great opportunity to do a tenant improvement build out for the new Olathe Pregnancy Clinic (OPC) this summer. This project was in joint connection with our intern project and included a full demo and renovation of the front half of the space including new offices, counseling rooms, restrooms, and a sonogram room. Each of the areas received new flooring, ceiling tiles and grid, paint, doors, and lighting.

The full scope of work was completed in less than two months!

This was in large part due to our superintendent, Stephen LaGue, who was able to keep on schedule and on budget to get OPC in their new space as soon as possible. Stephen and I thoroughly enjoyed working with the people of OPC and Wyandotte Pregnancy Clinic and were honored to be a part of their team.

Just over a month after project completion, the whole Straub team and a few of our subcontractors were invited to attend the clinics annual fundraiser. It was a great evening learning about their past and future projects and hearing their amazing impact from past clients.  We were so happy to celebrate their successes and hope to work with them again in the future!

The Dedication of the Abbatial Church of Our Lady Queen of Apostles

By Matthew Straub, Marketing Coordinator at Straub Construction

On September 9th, a beautiful ceremony took place in Gower, Missouri at the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus. The Dedication of a Catholic Church is a very specific process that exists in order to consecrate and dedicate to God a material temple, as the Church consecrates most things that serve religious usage.

The Dedication

This dedication involved over 75 religious people from bishops, priests, sisters, and monks. It started on the outside of the church where the exteriors were blessed, accompanied by a litany of prayers and songs. After a few hours, the ceremony moved into the interior of the church, where every cross, statue, pew, font, etc. was blessed.

The Altar of the Church was the next thing to be dedicated and blessed. The Altar blessing also included the placing of the Holy Relics of three Saints. The Relics of Saint Maria Goretti, Pope Saint Pius X, and Saint John Neumann were placed into the Altar. After the Dedication ceremony was complete, the First Mass was celebrated in the newly dedicated Church. The day was concluded with a delicious celebration feast.

This was an incredible ceremony and we are blessed to be a part of such a holy place. Here are some photos from the day.

Employee Spotlight: Jake McLees, Superintendent

By Joe Riedel, Director of Business Development at Straub Construction

Jake McLeesStraub is excited to welcome Jake McLees as a full time superintendent with our Field Supervision team.

A recent graduate of Central Missouri University, Jake is not actually new to Straub. October marks his one-year anniversary when he started working as a part-time intern with us. While in school, he spent his days away from the classroom (Fridays and holiday breaks) doing everything from general labor to assisting the superintendents with supervisory and management tasks.

An Early Start

Jake began his life in construction at 12 years old, working on his grandmother’s farm near Kearney, Missouri. During his high school years, he built several barns for ranchers and farmers in the area and enjoyed the work. He knew early in life he wanted a career in construction. Problem solving and the opportunity to work with his hands are what he finds most rewarding. He also spent a summer working for a large concrete contractor, where he was tasked with surveying, forming, finishing and eventually ran small crews. Jake believes this experience will be highly valuable as a superintendent because he will be able to see jobs from the subcontractor perspective.

Why Straub?

There’s a unique story behind how Jake connected with Straub Construction. His father, a retired Kansas City Missouri police officer, is now a security consultant for a nearby, large school district. He contacted our Director of Field Services as a reference for the security technology Straub uses at our job sites. Both have the gift of gab, so the conversation went further. One thing led to another, and Jake started working part-time at Straub shortly after.

The family atmosphere and opportunity to run projects right away are what enticed Jake to join our team. In fact, he has already completed his first project as a superintendent – a renovation of Sacred Heart Church in Shawnee.

Please join us in welcoming Jake McLees to the Straub Family!
