Woof’s Stay & Play | A Home Away From Home for Dogs

By Matthew Straub, Marketing Coordinator at Straub Construction

Woofs-TopekaWhat is Woof’s?

In February the Woof’s Stay & Play facility in Topeka Kansas opened its doors to many four-legged best friends throughout the Topeka area. Woof’s Stay & Play is a business that believes in creating a home away from home for dogs. They also create peace of mind to the many dog parents who drop them off.

Woof’s provides short term and long term stays for pets. The short-term stays are convenient for those who are just heading to work in the morning and need somewhere for their dog to have fun. The long-term stays are great for those who are heading out of town and can’t find a dog sitter.

A Day at Woof’sWoofs-Topeka

Throughout the days, the dogs can be found running around the outdoor space, being cleaned, and groomed. Also, when weather permits Woof’s will open the outdoor dog pool. One of the things that is so popular about Woof’s is that all the pet community spaces are equipped with webcams. This allows the owners can check on them digitally throughout the day and have a sense of security.

In the evenings, the pets are fed their dinner and put into their “suites” for the night. For those owners who have selected a “luxury suite” the dog can enjoy a more spacious stay, comfortable bed, small flat screen tv where they can enjoy a movie. The luxury suites are also equipped with webcams for the owner to have some peace of mind.

The Projects

The Woof’s Stay & Play in Topeka is one of three Woof’s projects that Straub Construction has been hired to complete. Woof’s Lawrence is far into its construction and will be completed in the next few weeks. Woof’s Overland Park has just started and will be completed in about five months.

All three of these projects have an extremely aggressive short construction schedule of about five months each. All three of the Woof’s locations were formerly businesses that are being renovated into state-of-the-art homes away from home for dogs.

The Topeka location used to be a Sears Auto Center and the Lawrence location used to be a Half Price Books. The Overland Park location  was a dog kennel which is remaining operational throughout the construction process. Through strong collaboration our team was able to overcome this complicated situation.

These are extremely rewarding projects that impact dog lovers throughout their respective communities. We are very proud to be working with Woof’s Stay & Play on these projects.

Joe Riedel WATCH D.O.G.S.Last fall, during Back to School night at my kids’ school, I had just been handed the new school year calendar.

It’s an exercise I go through every year. I skip right through the first semester. Holiday break? Nope, no big deal. Spring Break? Nope again. We would deal with that later.

My eyes locked onto February, and there it is. BOOM! Yes, my birthday would fall on a WEEKDAY! Why is this such a big deal? It’s because that allowed me to sign up for the WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dad of Great Students) program on my birthday. If you aren’t familiar, please take a moment to learn more by clicking this link.

This year turned out to be an exceptional experience, and I learned a lot about my kids, their school, and myself.

HWATCH D.O.G.S. Logoere are some of my key takeaways:

  1. My kids treated my WATCH D.O.G.S. birthday as if it was THEIR birthday. They too (mentally) circled the day on their “calendar.” As we got closer to the day, there was an ongoing debate in our household as to exactly what activities we would be doing during each recess.
  2. Speaking of recess, I am WAY out of shape. My younger son’s recess came up first. You would think playing two-hand touch football with a bunch of eight-year olds would be easy. Think again. I handled myself pretty well as the “all time QB”, but they got the best of me when I was on defense. Trying to stop a kid with unlimited energy and whose center of gravity was at least two feet lower than mine proved to be much like trying to catch a chicken running around a farmhouse. Trust me. That metaphorical chicken won’t be seeing the inside of a frying pan anytime soon.
  3. Apparently, twenty fifth grade boys are too many to have playing football on the playground while other kids are present. This was with my oldest son’s group. I’m not sure how many is too many, but the teachers were definitely quick to let me know that the number is much lower than twenty. It’s much closer to TWO.
  4. I am amazed by the faculty and staff at our schools. Children deserve the best, and they are getting it at this school. Their patience, kindness, strength, and ability to multi-task have humbled me.

I am so thankful for the faculty and staff at Riverview Elementary who helped me celebrate my birthday in such great style. I’ve already peeked ahead at next year’s calendar, and you can count me in for a certain Thursday in February of 2020!

Employee Spotlight: Henry Falk, Estimator

By Hannah Morrey Brown, Project Manager at Straub Construction

Straub Construction: Henry FalkStraub would like to take a minute to recognize one our of estimators, Henry Falk! Henry has been with Straub for two years now, and has become an integral part of our preconstruction team during that time.

Born and raised in Prairie Village, Henry left to attend Kansas State where he majored in Construction Science and Management. He’s always enjoyed the process of building things, large or small, and has regularly participated in a variety of home renovation projects with his brothers.

“As an estimator, you get the unique opportunity to work on a wide variety of project types and experience working with a diverse clientele – one day a church, the next day a school, and the following a local business owner. I enjoy being a part of the design phase as well and seeing projects go from a simple napkin sketch to a fully functional building.”

Henry has experience working across a wide swath of sectors which enables him to provide owners with alternative ideas and detailed estimates.

Outside of work, Henry is married to Lily Falk and the two reside in the Waldo area. He enjoys continuing to work on home renovation projects with his brothers, golfing when the weather allows, and photography. We’re so glad to have Henry on our team!
