Employee Spotlight: Alan Von Holten, Superintendent

By Hannah Morrey Brown, Project Manager at Straub Construction

Alan Von HoltenStraub is excited to welcome Alan Von Holten to the team as our newest superintendent!

Alan joins our team with nearly 30 years of construction experience under his belt. After working as a welder for 12 years, he became a carpenter and worked his way up to managing his own projects. We’re excited for the level of expertise he brings to the job as he tackles one our biggest projects, Brighton Crossing!

Alan has had the opportunity to know other Straub teammates through various professional organizations, so when the chance arose, he was excited about joining and knew it would be the right fit. Now at six weeks into his first project, he’s happy the rain has finally stopped, and they can get going!

Alan was born and raised in Sedalia but moved to the Kansas City area for work and currently resides in Eudora with his family. Outside of work, Alan spends the majority of his time attending his three children’s sporting events, but he also enjoys being outside and getting in a round of golf when he can.

Please join us in welcoming Alan to Straub Construction!

Project Groundbreaking

Yesterday, on a beautiful sunny afternoon, Avila University broke ground on the renovation and expansion of the Goppert Theatre. The new enhanced facility will be called the Goppert Performing Arts Center.

Goppert Theater History

The Goppert Theatre at Avila University was built in 1974 and named after Vita Goppert. Vita, a 1972 Avila Graduate was instrumental in the establishment of the theater. In 2016 the estate of Vita Goppert made a generous donation which kicked off the capital campaign for this project. More than 220 alumni, staff, and friends also supported this project with their generous gifts.

The Project

The addition to the Goppert Theatre will provide increased rehearsal space, an expanded 200-seat black box theater, and a new stage shop for stage design production. This will give the students experience working with professional-level facilities, practices, and equipment. The addition will not only impact theater performances but will also provide resources to the other programs in Avila’s School of Performing Arts.

The Impact

At Avila University, 23 percent of undergraduate students participate in performing arts activities. This renovation and expansion will also have a great impact on the surrounding community. More than 20 community groups and an estimated 14,000 community members utilize or attend performances in the Goppert Theatre annually.

This is the second project that Straub Construction is building for Avila University. In 2014 we completed renovations of two of the academic buildings on campus, O’Reilly Hall and the Library/Learning Commons. We will be working collaboratively with Helix Architecture + Design & Lankford|Fendler + associates to deliver on our promise and commitment to better Avila University. Avila has an over 100-year history of inspiring students to learn and grow.

We are extremely excited to be a part of this amazing project and to once again help to further the important mission of Avila University.

Project Kickoff: St. James Academy Athletic Field – Drone Video

By Matthew Straub, Marketing Coordinator at Straub Construction

St. James Academy

After much planning and preparation, Straub Construction has started to move some dirt as we kick off our project at St. James Academy. St. James Academy is a Catholic high school located in Lenexa Kansas. The Academy first opened its doors to a small group of 120 freshman students in 2005. This day in 2005 was a long-awaited day that was met with excitement, trepidation, and wonder, trust me, I was there. Every year since then, the St. James community has continued to grow. Today, there are over 900 students enrolled at St. James Academy.

Dreams Become Reality

As a member of the first graduating class of St. James Academy, I am extremely excited to see and be a part of St. James taking another step toward the future. For four years I had soccer practice on the grass field where the new turf field will be located. Those four years on that field were littered with sprained ankles and dreams of a future field that would take its place. Within a few months those dreams will be realized, and St. James Academy will have a beautiful turf field to be proud of. Straub Construction is thrilled for this project to begin and to play our part in furthering the great mission of St. James Academy.
