Yesterday, on a beautiful sunny afternoon, Avila University broke ground on the renovation and expansion of the Goppert Theatre. The new enhanced facility will be called the Goppert Performing Arts Center.
Goppert Theater History
The Goppert Theatre at Avila University was built in 1974 and named after Vita Goppert. Vita, a 1972 Avila Graduate was instrumental in the establishment of the theater. In 2016 the estate of Vita Goppert made a generous donation which kicked off the capital campaign for this project. More than 220 alumni, staff, and friends also supported this project with their generous gifts.
The addition to the Goppert Theatre will provide increased rehearsal space, an expanded 200-seat black box theater, and a new stage shop for stage design production. This will give the students experience working with professional-level facilities, practices, and equipment. The addition will not only impact theater performances but will also provide resources to the other programs in Avila’s School of Performing Arts.
At Avila University, 23 percent of undergraduate students participate in performing arts activities. This renovation and expansion will also have a great impact on the surrounding community. More than 20 community groups and an estimated 14,000 community members utilize or attend performances in the Goppert Theatre annually.
This is the second project that Straub Construction is building for Avila University. In 2014 we completed renovations of two of the academic buildings on campus, O’Reilly Hall and the Library/Learning Commons. We will be working collaboratively with Helix Architecture + Design & Lankford|Fendler + associates to deliver on our promise and commitment to better Avila University. Avila has an over 100-year history of inspiring students to learn and grow.
We are extremely excited to be a part of this amazing project and to once again help to further the important mission of Avila University.
