Employee Spotlight: Connor Wentz-Hall, Superintendent

The team here at Straub is excited to welcome Conner Wentz-Hall to our company as a superintendent! He interned for us last summer before his senior year and made the decision to come back full-time after his graduation this past spring. Conner attended Pitt State University where he received a degree in Construction Management.

Although the majority of Conner’s family is in the railroad business, he wanted to try something a little different – he knew he wanted hands-on type work and to be outside as much as possible which led him to construction! Conner is most excited about the different types of projects he can gain experience on as a superintendent with Straub and the thrill of watching a project go from startup to completion.

He also had this to say about why he chose Straub, “Aside from the project experience, it means a lot to be more than just a number even as an intern or a new hire.”

Conner hails from Tonganoxie, KS, where he still lives with his family. Outside of work he enjoys being outdoors doing anything from kayaking to camping. We’re so glad Conner is a member of our team, please join us in welcoming him to Straub Construction!

Employee Spotlight: Justin Briggs, Superintendent

After interning for us last summer, we’re excited that Justin made the decision to come on full time after his graduation this spring. Justin attended Missouri State where he majored in Construction Management.

Justin became interested in construction after having multiple family members and friends work in the industry. He also enjoyed his construction internships through college. His favorite aspect of this work is the start to finish progression and seeing the tangible change as a project comes together. As a superintendent, Justin is most excited about running his own project and the accomplishment of seeing a project through from start to finish.

Justin is from Creighton, MO, and currently resides in Garden City. Outside of work he enjoys almost anything outdoors including hiking, hunting, and fishing.  He’s also excited to be getting a lab puppy later this summer.

We’re thrilled to have Justin as a part of our team. Please join us in welcoming him to Straub Construction!

Employee Spotlight: Alan Von Holten, Superintendent

Alan Von HoltenStraub is excited to welcome Alan Von Holten to the team as our newest superintendent!

Alan joins our team with nearly 30 years of construction experience under his belt. After working as a welder for 12 years, he became a carpenter and worked his way up to managing his own projects. We’re excited for the level of expertise he brings to the job as he tackles one our biggest projects, Brighton Crossing!

Alan has had the opportunity to know other Straub teammates through various professional organizations, so when the chance arose, he was excited about joining and knew it would be the right fit. Now at six weeks into his first project, he’s happy the rain has finally stopped, and they can get going!

Alan was born and raised in Sedalia but moved to the Kansas City area for work and currently resides in Eudora with his family. Outside of work, Alan spends the majority of his time attending his three children’s sporting events, but he also enjoys being outside and getting in a round of golf when he can.

Employee Spotlight: Henry Falk, Estimator

Straub Construction: Henry FalkStraub would like to take a minute to recognize one our of estimators, Henry Falk! Henry has been with Straub for two years now, and has become an integral part of our preconstruction team during that time.

Born and raised in Prairie Village, Henry left to attend Kansas State where he majored in Construction Science and Management. He’s always enjoyed the process of building things, large or small, and has regularly participated in a variety of home renovation projects with his brothers.

“As an estimator, you get the unique opportunity to work on a wide variety of project types and experience working with a diverse clientele – one day a church, the next day a school, and the following a local business owner. I enjoy being a part of the design phase as well and seeing projects go from a simple napkin sketch to a fully functional building.”

Henry has experience working across a wide swath of sectors which enables him to provide owners with alternative ideas and detailed estimates.

Outside of work, Henry is married to Lily Falk and the two reside in the Waldo area. He enjoys continuing to work on home renovation projects with his brothers, golfing when the weather allows, and photography. We’re so glad to have Henry on our team!

Employee Spotlight: Kim McFarland, Accounts Payable Administrator

Straub is thrilled to focus this Employee Spotlight on Kim McFarland, who joined our accounting team in June 2018. Beginning her construction career in 1998, Kim is a twenty-year veteran in the industry. Throughout her tenure, she has taken on a variety of responsibilities, both in the office and in the field, including accounting and project administration and management. Straub is excited to benefit from her extensive and diverse experience.

Kim is a native of Parkville, Missouri, where she grew up, attended high school nearby, and continues her education at Park University. In 1993, she left Kansas City for the Washington DC area. However, she came home to Parkville in 2003.

Passion for Construction

With her first job, Kim immediately fell in love with the industry. She enjoys seeing buildings go up and learning about construction methods and techniques. During her time in DC, she worked as an on-site administrator on a project at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In her current role at Straub, she values the relationships she has formed with our great subcontractors and vendors.

Why Straub?

Community Service is a calling for Kim. Straub’s commitment to community service and giving back were immediately apparent and helped guide her to know, “that’s where I want to be.”

Outside of Work

Kim is a solid Royals fan, and a DIE HARD Chiefs fan. She also loves to paint and ride horses.

Employee Spotlight: Jake McLees, Superintendent

Jake McLeesStraub is excited to welcome Jake McLees as a full time superintendent with our Field Supervision team.

A recent graduate of Central Missouri University, Jake is not actually new to Straub. October marks his one-year anniversary when he started working as a part-time intern with us. While in school, he spent his days away from the classroom (Fridays and holiday breaks) doing everything from general labor to assisting the superintendents with supervisory and management tasks.

An Early Start

Jake began his life in construction at 12 years old, working on his grandmother’s farm near Kearney, Missouri. During his high school years, he built several barns for ranchers and farmers in the area and enjoyed the work. He knew early in life he wanted a career in construction. Problem solving and the opportunity to work with his hands are what he finds most rewarding. He also spent a summer working for a large concrete contractor, where he was tasked with surveying, forming, finishing and eventually ran small crews. Jake believes this experience will be highly valuable as a superintendent because he will be able to see jobs from the subcontractor perspective.

Why Straub?

There’s a unique story behind how Jake connected with Straub Construction. His father, a retired Kansas City Missouri police officer, is now a security consultant for a nearby, large school district. He contacted our Director of Field Services as a reference for the security technology Straub uses at our job sites. Both have the gift of gab, so the conversation went further. One thing led to another, and Jake started working part-time at Straub shortly after.

The family atmosphere and opportunity to run projects right away are what enticed Jake to join our team. In fact, he has already completed his first project as a superintendent – a renovation of Sacred Heart Church in Shawnee.

Employee Spotlight: Jeff Simmons, Project Manager

Straub Construction: Jeff SimmonsStraub is excited to welcome Jeff Simmons to the team as our newest project manager!

Jeff recently moved to the Kansas City area from Arlington, Virginia, and was born and raised in Northern Virginia. He attended Virginia Tech and pursued a degree in construction before working for a large firm building K-12 schools in the DC area. He later switched to a much smaller company which enabled him to do a little bit of everything from estimating to project management to closeout.

Straub was an easy choice for Jeff after receiving recommendations from family in the area and finding a company that was a nice medium size between his past two experiences. After visiting for an interview, Jeff really hit it off with our whole team and was excited about the quality workplace atmosphere.

Outside of work, Jeff is married to Anamarie whom he met in the DC area while she was working on Capitol Hill. Anamarie is originally from Lee’s Summit, and they’re both looking forward to being back around family. Jeff’s favorite hobbies including spending time with their two dogs, home brewing craft beers, and performing as a choral singer.
