By Matthew Straub, Marketing Coordinator at Straub Construction.
On July 31, over twenty members of our Straub Construction Family had the privilege of serving dinner at the One City Café at Bishop Sullivan Center. This time serving was particularly special because it is our first time serving since completing the renovation of the Café. It was also special because the meal was served in honor of Ernie Straub Jr (aka Chief) who loved and supported the Bishop Sullivan Center for decades.
Serving Food With Dignity
Serving for the first time in the newly renovated space, the differences are astounding. The space used to be very dark, dingy, and confined. Now, the One City Cafe has become a very spacious, well-lit, clean, and restaurant-style space. The Cafe now has an extremely positive and inviting feel. The One City Café is the epitome of what a food kitchen should be and is truly serving food with dignity to the people of Kansas City.
On the night we served, 224 adults and 14 kids were fed a healthy and nutritious meal. The menu featured a balanced meal of “breakfast for dinner”. The meal consisted of eggs, hash browns, French toast, a choice of turkey or pork sausage, fruit, and yogurt. Everyone ate and had their fill.
Over 6,530 Meals Served in July
During the month of July, the One City Café fed an average of 217 people per night and served lunch to 67 people per day. That is a total of over 6,530 meals served in the month of July alone. The One City Café at Bishop Sullivan Center is truly doing amazing things for the hungry in Kansas City, and we are humbled to be a part of this great organization. It was a great pleasure to serve at the One City Café, and we look forward to serving again soon.
