For more than 30 years, Shalom House has offered shelter and hospitality to houseless men in Kansas City, Kansas.

ABOUT SHALOM HOUSE

Each day, Shalom House opens its doors to men of all faiths in need of shelter, food, and companionship. Services are provided at no charge and include a safe place to sleep, eat breakfast and dinner, shower (toiletries and other necessities provided), do laundry, and get clothing. In addition, men get employment assistance as well as referrals for medical care. Most of all, the men have the support of people who genuinely care—they receive the resources and encouragement to successfully transition to permanent housing.

The Shalom House is not a typical shelter, it is a 6-9 month program to get residents off the streets and into permanent housing. In order to be accepted into the program, each man has to interview and dedicate themselves to completing the program. Approximately 80-90% who join the program end up in permanent housing upon completion.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

A partnership with Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, NSPJ Architects, and Hoss & Brown Engineers, this project is a 21,600 SF renovation of the former Sanctuary of Hope, Prayer and Retreat Center for Priests. This facility was owned by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and donated to Catholic Charities, as the old Shalom House location had limited space and could only accommodate 24 men. The renovation will allow them to serve up to 60 men in their program.

The new facility will feature 30 bedrooms, meeting rooms, common areas, a new commercial kitchen, and a chapel. Scope of work includes finish upgrades, almost a full replacement of the MEP systems, windows, and roof replacement.
